| My Comments | : | With the vibrant performance, the sensitive tabla accompaniment, the quality recording, and the total atmosphere that the music produces, this album is one of the best showcases of the santoor and a Shiv Kumar Sharma performance. This is a good buy.
A recording from a live concert from the Guru Shishya Parampara festival held in Calcutta in connection with the 150th anniversary celebrations of The Times of India in 1989. In this album, Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma plays an extensive Raga Bageshwari for over an hour. The album begins with an alap, and the music takes some time to get into the groove. Raga Bageshwari is well suited to the santoor, but the instrument, though in its modified form and with the ability to sustain notes over a long period of time, is still not the ideal vehicle for a flowing alap. The crystal clear sound of the santoor, though, sets the mood. It is only when Shiv Kumar Sharma progresses to the jod that the raga comes into its own and begins to show all its colours appropriately. Side B begins with a long and leisurely vilambit in jhaptal, with Shiv Kumar Sharma exploring the contours of the raga in expansive detail. Raga Bageshwari is light in nature, but at the same time portrays a reflective mood, and the santoor brings out the nuances of these feelings with clarity and deftness. It also evokes scenes of nature, as it always does. The second composition is a drut in teental, which builds up the raga to a climax and ends it in a crescendo. And, with Ustad Shafaat Ahmed Khan's tabla closely following the santoor, it is at times difficult to tell the instrument one is hearing. This turns out to be a shimmering performance overall. |
