Once in a while you get shown the light
In the strangest of places
If you look at it right
- Scarlet Begonias (Garcia/Hunter)
Magic is what we do. Music is how we do it.
- Jerry Garcia talking about the Grateful Dead

Dick Latvala
joined with Jerry, Pig, Brent, Keith & all the rest on August 6, 1999
Fare you well, fare you well
I love you more than words can tell
Listen to the river sing sweet songs
to rock my soul
- Brokedown Palace (Garcia/Hunter)
August 7, 1999
Dick "showed me the light" via his Dick's Picks series several years ago.
Always a GD fan (since Terrapin first came out), I truly didn't
understand the Dead until I rediscovered them in the 90's, when I
stumbled across DP7, and thought to myself, "Wow, this looks cool!".
I've never met Dick, though I've read a lot about him in the last 10 days. I
sincerely understand his joy in spreading the music. For me, that's what it's
all about, helping someone discover something that touches their soul. I can't
thank you enough Dick, for rocking my soul.

| Ever since my (forced) upgrade to Win2k, burning has been a long and painful process for me. As such, I'm not really looking for new trades, and am taking on very, very few B&Ps. Still, there's nothing wrong with dropping me a note asking for one or the other; just don't be too upset if I don't get back to you right away (or even at all).

My basic list of trading guidelines:
- I'm looking for CDs only (no Cassettes, DATs or MiniDiscs, unless you supply the player, also).
- DAO, not TAO (DAO => Disk-at-once recording, as opposed to TAO => track-at-once). If you can't do DAO or the source is TAO, please tell me!
- Loss-less digital only unless clearly marked as otherwise (please don't surprise me with analog gens, MD or MP3).
- Please don't put in filler without asking me! I generally like to trade, and trade for, whole shows. If the show spans 3 discs but doesn't fill them all up, it's OK with me!
- I am currently using TDK & Mitsui blanks. Please use a good quality blank in return. Please do not send Kodaks or Maxell! My player & burner hate them. There are plenty of high-quality, inexpensive blanks out there; don't go for the cheap ones.
- I enclose a JCard with my CDs (trades only); although you don't have to do that, some kind of track list would be nice. If you do send a JCard, a single JCard for 2 or 3 CDs is fine, as I use Slim-Line doubles and triples (both are available at American Digital).
- I've been shown the light w/r/t CaseLogic sleeves and bubble wrap mailers. Just as safe, and way, way cheaper to mail! But if you still want to trade with jewel cases, that's OK too.
- Please, no fiber mailers!
- Newbies welcome! I will do B&P as time permits!
- I can do SHN or Audio trades (SHN preferred).
- I can also do e-trades (downloads) or snailmail (e-trades prefered). My connection is not stellarly fast, but it's decent enough.
- If you'd like to trade, drop me a line at: headlight@northbound-train.com (for B&P, see below)
Trade Status
If we already have a trade set up, and you'd like to check on the status, please visit my
Trade Status page. If you
don't know your trade ID, drop me a line at headlight@northbound-train.com or bnp@northbound-train.com.
Some info about my setup:
- Plextor PX-32TSi - 32x SCSI CD-Rom source, giving flawless DAE
- Plextor PX-R820Ti - 8x SCSI CD-R Burner, burning a 74 minute CD in
under 10 minutes!
If you want more details on why I bought these drives (and where and how much),
drop me a line at headlight@northbound-train.com.
[So many people have dropped me a line that I created a FAQ]
An important note about the software I use:
I use Adaptec's Easy CD Creator. More importantly, I do not
usually use EAC.
There are folks who would only like to trade with others if they use EAC;
hence my little disclaimer here. I have nothing against the program,
however I feel it is unnecessary for me, and no one has said anything to
convince me otherwise. I spent the extra money and went the extra mile in
researching my purchase, so that I could do flawless DAE and accurate
burns, CD to CD when possible. I choose not to take the extra time needed
to use EAC because time, for me, is very precious. I go out of my way to
document any imperfections in the source CDs, and if by some chance I
introduce diginoise because I kicked my machine while doing the burn, then
I will gladly re-burn and re-mail the CDs at my expense.
If you happen to have any of the following, I would be Grateful indeed!

Miscellaneous
I'm interested in random Bruce Hornsby,
Phil & Friends, and acoustic shows of any kind. I'd
also like to hear some Banyan someday.
Also, I'm looking to upgrade the following. If you have better copies of these,
please let me know!
GRATEFUL DEAD
| Show Date | Venue | Location | Upgrade Reason |
|---|
| 03-01-1969 | Fillmore West | San Francisco, CA | Too many little pops, missing encore. |
| 11-14-1973 | San Diego Sports Arena | San Diego, CA | Truckin' fades in, lost channels in Big River and Eyes, Truckin' --> Wharf Rat broken up across CDs! |
| 05-19-1974 | Portland Memorial Coliseum | Portland OR | Missing 1/3 of first set. |
| 12-31-1990 | Oakland Coliseum Arena | Oakland, CA | NFA and The Other One fades in, Dark Star cut. |
| 06-20-1991 | Pine Knob Music Theatre | Clarkston, MI | Bird Song is spliced! |
Having been one myself, I know what it's like to try and get started.
Don't dispair! There are plenty of people out there willing to help out, myself
included. If I have the time, and you have the disks, I'll copy anything you
like. Just ask!
Don't let anyone rip you off with 2-for-1 deals, or extra postage or
anything like that! If someone isn't willing to spend the time & energy to
spread the music for the sheer joy of it, then they shouldn't be doing it!
Please don't encourage these people; I'll burn anything you'd like, if I have
the time; just ask nicely!

The way I see it, the music isn't mine, so who am I to hoard it?

[B & P == Blanks and Postage - you supply the CD blanks and
pay postage both ways, I copy the shows. For more information, see Ed McNichol's
most excellent B&P How-To.]
- You must email me first, at
bnp@northbound-train.com. This is
especially true if you don't have my address! I will not
accept B&P requests at any other email address!
- Please understand that non-tree B&P has lower priority for me than
regular trades.
- I generally limit people to 2 shows or 6 CDs at a time, whichever is
greater. Note: if I've invited you to participate in a
specific B&P offer, please don't add to it to bring yourself up to
2 shows or 6 CDs!
- I burn at 8x speeds, so please send me CDs that are certified for this!
If you don't know which brands are, please ask (I recommend the TDK 6x
& 8x Certified Plus blanks). Please do not send Kodak
blanks! Even though they say they are 8x certified, not
all of them are. See Plextor's
Recommended Media
list for some, uh, recommendations. Also, please don't use Maxell CDs;
while they made great cassettes, their CD-R blanks are cheap.
If you send cheap discs and they fail to take the burn
(i.e. "coasterize"), it'll be up to you to send me more.
- You do not need to buy Consumer Audio CD blanks -- data CD-R blanks work
just fine and cost a whole lot less.
- You can send the CDs in their jewel cases (in which case I recommend the
free US Post Office Priority Mail boxes), or put them in Case
Logic sleeves (15 for $5.50 at Staples) and send them in a bubble wrap
mailer. Just don't send the jewel cases in a bubble wrap mailer (they
break too easily). Of course, they're your discs....
- No fiber mailers; boxes or bubble wrap mailers only!
The fiber mailers tear, and the fiber crap gets all over the CDs
('cause the jewel cases usually crack), and I'm not going to risk my burner.
Hint: if it says Padded Mailer and doesn't mention
Bubble Wrap or Bubble mailer, it's probably fiber. I will send
your CDs back unburned if you send them in a fiber mailer.
- Please include your mailing address, email address,
return postage and a list of the shows you're requesting, in case I
lose your email. Oh yeah, a completed return mailing label would be nice, too.
- I can no longer print out JCards for B&Ps; I just don't have the time!
I can print out a tracklist if you'd like (it's the same page you can
print out on your own, just by clicking on the CD's link in the listing
above). That said, if you would like the tracklist, please add an
additional ounce to the return postage.
- Please do not send cash or checks! It's a real
hassle for me to track who sent how much cash. Besides, I'm tired of
people sending me $3.00 for a $3.20 stamp! If you send me cash or a
check, I will email you and ask that stamps be sent, and I'll send the
cash/check back with the package!
- Please do not send metered envelops! My post
office will not accept metered mail from out of the area! If you send
metered mail, I will email you requesting that stamps be sent, instead.
- Please read Ed McNicol's excellent B&P How-To,
at least once.
Please don't think badly of me for putting these "rules" in place. I do upwards
of 15 B&P deals a month, and these rules help make things run a whole
lot smoother on my end.
